Censorship by any other name…

In today’s posted stories, two words pop out to me: gaslighted and weasel words.

Johns Hopkins first published a story highlighting a study that showed little change in the overall death rate in America during the pandemic. Then they “un-published” the story because it didn’t fit their preconceived COVID-19 narrative. Oh, but it wasn’t censorship, they said. It was because uneducated people were misusing the information “to support dangerous inaccuracies that minimize the impact of the pandemic.”

What?

This reminds me of the childhood game, Rock, Paper and Scissors. The medical department is Scissors and the economic department is paper. One, two, three: scissors cut paper. Whack on the wrist.

Yanni Gu was the original author. As her story was spiked, she was forced to publish a rebuttal using the exact same title as the original. Totally confusing to search engines. Actually, it was just her name as author, but the style of writing was nothing like the original. This suggests, of course, that some “higher-up” wrote the carefully-worded rebuttal and then shoved it down her throat.

The rebuttal states, “Our articles and content are not endorsed by the University or the School of Medicine, and our decision to retract this article was made independently.”

Gaslighting.

The last paragraph restates, “Because of these inaccuracies and our failure to provide additional information about the effects of COVID-19, The News-Letter decided to retract this article.”

More gaslighting.

All of this amounts to “weasel words”. It is Nineteen Eighty-Four-esque Newspeak. Ignorance is knowledge. Censorship is caring.

Academic freedom is over.
